About MONEY GAUGE
MONEY GAUGE is a free, keyless USD macro terminal. It puts the dollar's position in four places at once — price (FX and a recomputed DXY), risk appetite (global indices and US sector flows), policy pricing (the Treasury curve and its spreads) and fiscal supply (federal debt outstanding) — using only primary public data.
What the terminal covers
- FX — 18 currency pairs versus the dollar, one-year trends, an intraday strength ranking and a DXY recomputed from ECB reference rates.
- Cross-assets — dollar-denominated assets (gold, WTI, copper, bitcoin) and their daily changes.
- Equities — 12 global indices plus net-flow estimates across all 11 GICS sectors.
- Rates & debt — the 11-tenor Treasury curve, basis-point changes, the 2s10s spread and the federal debt balance.
- News — public RSS tagged into Fed policy, USD, Treasuries, equities, commodities and macro data.
How it is built
The site is a Next.js App Router application with a single server-side aggregator at /api/dashboard. Each upstream call is serialized per host with an interval greater than one second, daily bars are cached per symbol, and the aggregate uses stale-while-revalidate so pages never wait on an upstream queue.
Charts are hand-built SVG components, so there is no heavy charting dependency and no third-party tracking script.

Methodology
Dollar index (DXY) recomputation
DXY is a geometrically weighted index of six currencies against the dollar, with fixed ICE weights: euro 57.6%, yen 13.6%, sterling 11.9%, Canadian dollar 9.1%, Swedish krona 4.2% and Swiss franc 3.6%. The formula is 50.14348112 × EURUSD^−0.576 × USDJPY^0.136 × GBPUSD^−0.119 × USDCAD^0.091 × USDSEK^0.042 × USDCHF^0.036. The constant 50.14348112 sets the index to 100 in March 1973. Note that the index contains no emerging-market or renminbi weight.
Sector net-flow estimation (CLV × turnover)
For each SPDR sector ETF, the close location value is CLV = ((close − low) − (high − close)) / (high − low), bounded between −1 and +1. Estimated net flow equals CLV × volume × close, which is positive when a sector closes near its high on heavy turnover. The five-day cumulative sums the last five sessions; relative volume (RVOL) is today's volume divided by the 20-day average.
Yield curve
Tenors run from 1 month to 30 years at 11 points. Daily change is measured against the previous business day; the one-month comparison uses the value roughly 21 business days earlier. Spreads are quoted in basis points rather than percent.
Federal debt
Debt outstanding comes from Treasury's Debt to the Penny, split into debt held by the public and intragovernmental holdings. It is published on a T+1 business-day basis, so the newest figure is normally yesterday's.
Frequently asked questions
- Is MONEY GAUGE free, and does it require API keys?
- It is free and keyless. Every module reads a public endpoint: ECB reference rates via Frankfurter, FRED CSV for Treasury yields, U.S. Treasury Fiscal Data for debt, Yahoo Finance chart endpoints for equities and futures, and public RSS for news.
- How often is the data updated?
- The underlying feeds are end-of-day or delayed: ECB reference rates are published once per business day around 16:00 CET, Treasury yields and federal debt are end-of-day / T+1, and index and ETF quotes are delayed about 15 minutes. The aggregate response is cached for 10 minutes and refreshed in the background; the browser revalidates when the page regains focus rather than polling on a fixed timer.
- How is the dollar index (DXY) calculated here?
- DXY is recomputed from ECB reference rates using the ICE formula: 50.14348112 × EURUSD^−0.576 × USDJPY^0.136 × GBPUSD^−0.119 × USDCAD^0.091 × USDSEK^0.042 × USDCHF^0.036. Because the ECB series uses USD as the base currency, the EUR and GBP terms are inverted, which flips their exponents to positive. The resulting index tracks ICE DXY closely but is a reference calculation, not an official quote.
- Are the sector fund flows official ETF creation and redemption data?
- No. Official ETF flows are disclosed on a T+1 basis. MONEY GAUGE estimates same-day direction as CLV × turnover, where CLV = ((close − low) − (high − close)) / (high − low). It measures where each sector closed within its daily range, weighted by traded value, and should be read as a tape-strength signal rather than a subscription figure.
- What does the 2s10s spread mean?
- It is the 10-year Treasury yield minus the 2-year yield, expressed in basis points, where 1 basis point equals 0.01 percentage point. A negative value means the curve is inverted, a configuration that has historically preceded US recessions; the speed at which the curve re-steepens is a common input for pricing the policy path.
- Can the data be cited or reused?
- Each upstream provider keeps its own terms. ECB reference rates, FRED series and U.S. Treasury fiscal data are public and citation-friendly; equity and futures data follow Yahoo Finance terms. When citing this dashboard, attribute the original source (for example: ECB reference rates via MONEY GAUGE) rather than the aggregate alone.
Limitations
- Quotes are delayed or end-of-day; nothing here is an executable price.
- ECB reference rates are central-bank mid-rates fixed once per business day.
- Sector flows are estimated from price and volume, not official fund subscriptions.
- Nothing on this site is investment advice. Verify against primary sources before trading.
